-Is this an original or classic character? What have you dressed up like today?
Well, I draw my own comics and I’m an artist besides that for fun so I have hundreds of my own characters so I thought this one was good because you’re project seemed to be about why people got into comics and liked them. And my first comic was a Dark Phoenix X-Men comic when I was way too young to have it. My mom thought it was a coloring book and she let me buy it at a second hand book store. So I got into X-Men like most kids did. I made my own X-Men so that’s why Xavier’s on the sleeve. She’s an X-Men that’s overly woven into the X-Men universe. She’s the first original character I ever made.
-Explain the character!
Her name is Mav. A played off my own name for her. I knew way too much about X-Men when I made her so she is a love child of Charles and Moira while she was on a break with Sean so she gives birth to Mav but she doesn’t want to tell Charles because Charles has a lot of enemies at that time and they’ve already had issues with Charles’ other child and her other child. So she decides that she tells Sean, because they’re always on and off again and she’s like ‘What are we going to do with this girl? This baby that I have. She’s way too dangerous to leave with Charles.” And he’s like ‘Well, we’ll hide her’ and they put her away and she names her Mav after Sean’s ex-wife who died as a kind of tribute to Sean for taking this on.
-You know a lot about the Marvel universe.
I give the comic book panel at Sci-Fi. When I came up with this I was like 10.
-What’s Mav’s super power?
Mav’s super power. She has a few things. She can make people feel pain whether physically or emotionally or heals them. It’s both healing and pain. She can do either but she needs to touch someone in order to heal them, the emotional stuff she can do just within proximity. Her eyes glow when she uses her power that’s why the pink is in my eyes. The problem is, she uses a lot of energy when she does that and she takes on little bits of the pain or the feelings that she feels so its very energy draining for her and its very dangerous, if she heals someone who’s lethally wounded she could end up turning herself… she doesn’t do any infectious diseases because she’s not sure if she would take them on herself. So I did give her limitations to her power. I didn’t want to end up with like a Superman situation. He just heals everything and its wonderful. Eventually she knows about her father and she goes to find him and Gambit actually ends up giving her the moniker ‘Miracle’ after faith healers in the South, because he’s Cajan, and he runs into her first and that’s what he compares her to. So he calls her ‘Miracle’ and it just stays. That’s like her super hero name. Her X-Men name. She’s Miracle.
-Does she struggle with being good or bad?
She’s afraid of her own power. Her mother was constantly telling her, your father has enemies one day you might meet those enemies you should be able to defend yourself so she did learn how to use a sword because she was initially scared of her power. It’s a Katana. It has a pink sheath and a pink hilt.
